Sex Offender Unit
The Sex Offender Unit is in charge of monitoring all registered sex offenders in Newton County. The unit ensures that all offenders abide by any court ordered restrictions through community supervision and compliance checks. Investigators with the Sex Offender Unit routinely work with the Department of Corrections and the State Board of Pardons and Paroles to effectively monitor offenders.
The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for registering all sexual offenders and sexually dangerous predators who provide an address at which the sexual offender or sexual predator plans to or currently resides, or is homeless and plans to or currently sleeps in the county with 72 hours after release from prison or placed on probation, parole, supervised release, or entry into the state.
Per O.C.G.A. § 42-1-12 (i), The sheriff’s office in each county shall: |

Prepare and maintain a list of all sexual offenders and sexually dangerous predators residing in each county;
- Submit and update all information provided by the sexual offenders electronically to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation within two business days;
- Maintain a list of sexual offenders residing in the sheriff’s office; in the county administrative building; in the main administrative building for any municipal corporation; in the office of the clerk of the superior court; on a website maintained by the sheriff of the county;
- Update the public notices within two business days of receipt;
- Inform the public of the presence of sexual offenders in each community;
- Update any new information provided by the sexual offender within 72 hours of receipt;
- Within 72 hours of the receipt of changed required registration information, notify the Georgia Bureau of Investigation through the Criminal Justice Information System of each change of information;
- Enforce the criminal provisions of this Code section.
